Southwest Flavor

I’m enjoying a little southwest flavor inspired by Lynn’s Celebrity Cook-Along with Bobby Flay.

Bobby Flay, whose signature style~marrying the flavors of southwest with his love of grilling~ and known for his bold flavors & zingy spices, prompted a trip to the Farmers Market for this Cook-Along. . .

for a medley of veggies. . .

and for flowers. . .

Where I married my farmers market purchases with some bold, colorful patterns in salad plates, bowls & placemats for the table. . .

and blended some fruits for Sangria. . .

It’s always fun to play with my food~ economical & convenient, when today’s centerpiece is also this week’s dinner :-)

I spied this Bobby Flay recipe in the May issue of Food Network Magazine~

Red Chile Short Rib Tacos, recipe courtesy Bobby Flay for Food Network Magazine

We enjoyed these and will definitely make them again! I made a few changes~ omitting the port, (using red wine only) ; substituting beef stock for chicken; and using only ancho chile peppers since I was unable to find cascabel & New Mexico peppers. After browning the short ribs, instead of turning on the oven & the heat up in the kitchen, I put everything in crock pot on low for 8 hours, turning heat up in the tacos with a few jalapenos.

Recipe for the Red Pickled Onions included in the Chile Short Rib Taco recipe:

Bring 3/4 cup lime juice, 1/4 cup each red wine vinegar and sugar, and 1 tablespoon salt to a boil in a saucepan. Remove from the heat and let cool, 5 minutes. Toss with 1 thinly sliced red onion in a bowl; cover and chill at least 4 hours, stirring occasionally.

Rosé Sangria Spritzer, recipe courtesy Bobby Flay

I also added some peaches to the Sangria from the farmers market.

What a breathtakingly beautiful post! Even the sangria is gorgeous!!! The hot summer colors of the dishes, fabrics and flowers are beyond fantastic in the way they cozy up to the the array of fruits and vegetables. I am so in love with that mustard-color floral pot. It lends perfect Southwestern flair.

Lovin’ the great color Mary! The salad plates are spectacular and the flowers and veggies are so pretty. I’d love to enjoy a glass of the Sangria with you too. The Tacos are such a nice change from ground beef, kinda like a “grown up” Taco. Thanks so much for joining the Cook-Along:@)

Hi Mary, this is always a favorite stop for me! You have such variety in your tables, and this one is exciting and beautiful! I like the centerpiece/dinner idea! And those linens are hot! Gorgeous flowers and a great recipe. We grill our ribs over water for about 3 hours–no heat in the house that way. Thank you for the “better than a magazine” posts! Linda

  36. July 14, 2011 at 11:18 am

Wow, this table is a show-stopper! The glorious flowers alone would have caught my eye, but adding the wonderful colorful veggies takes it up a notch! I adore zinnias, and mixed with the other summer flowers yours look amazing! The food is tempting, too. My husband loves Bobby Flay and often cooks from his recipes.

  37. July 14, 2011 at 2:13 pm

WoW! I have to echo everyone’s sentiments.
I love the flowers (I’ve got a thing about them) and your table setting is amazing. My wife’s the cook in the family and she would say you’ve done Bobby Flay proud (smile)…even though I don’t cook, I know who he is since my wife watches him a lot:-)
    Smiling…got any leftovers?

    Wonderful post. Thanks for sharing.

Now this is my kind of table, colours galore!

I adore bright colours and this sure is bright. It reminds me of a post i did last year. Have a look and see what you think.
I love that beautiful dappled dahlia, do you know the name of it?
Have you noticed how all those colours pop out against the rather muted background?
