If you’re a dog owner, every day is paws for celebration . . .
but August 26th is National Dog Day!
National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate, Colleen Paige. It’s celebrated August 26th every year to encourage dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure, and embraces the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and “abuse-free life”.
The National Dog Day Foundation supports all breeds and varieties of dogs and discourages purchasing from unethical backyard breeders and puppy mills; instead, supporting reputable breeders or adopting from rescue shelters and homes.
Celebrate National Dog Day by taking your dog for a ride. . .
Or with a treat. . .Woof!
I found this ‘woof’ cookie cutter at Williams-Sonoma, perfect for a peanut butter dog biscuit for #NationalDogDay or any day you want to treat your canine companion!
‘Woof’ Peanut Butter Dog Treats
Makes approximately 2 dozen (3 1/2-inch x 1-inch) treats
Ingredients
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 egg
1/2 cup *peanut butter (*make sure your peanut butter does not contain Xylitol, a natural sugar alcohol sweetener which is harmful to dogs)
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup oats (quick or old-fashioned)
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In the bowl of food processor, add applesauce, egg, and peanut butter. Pulse to combine.
Add flour, cornmeal, and oats and process until dough comes together.
Turn dough onto floured surface and knead and roll out to 1/4 – 1/2 inch thick and cut into shapes. (Dough will be crumbly). Reroll scraps and repeat.
Place treats on parchment-lined cookie sheet and bake 12 minutes – 15 minutes or until treats are firm and edges are starting to brown. Cool on a wire rack and store treats in airtight container or freeze some for later.
You can use any shape or size cookie cutter to make these treats. If you’re using a larger size cookie cutter, increase the baking time.
Even quicker for the lazy days of summer, make your pup some Copycat Frosty Paws.
Easy Frozen Dog Treats that you can make in a blender!
Only 4 ingredients and your pup will lap them up!

I click for free kibble and kitty litter everyday since you wrote about it several years ago. Pets truly are our children, and just as demanding! Happy National Dog Day to Chloe and Gracie 🐾 🐾

So much fun, Mary. Your photos are so wonderful, they could be a documentary film of a day in the life of two adorable, happy girls. I’m saving your recipe for Jasper.
Hi! We have a mini Schnauzer, Elle. Totally spoiled…as all dogs should be, ha, ha. We live in Florida and those frozen treats would be perfect. Can you print the 4 ingredients? I try to use all organic ingredients as I am leary of GMO’s for us and our pet. I love your little girls. You do an awesome job keeping the fur around their eyes and mouth stain-free. Not an easy job! Best wishes, Nonni
Your dogs are so adorable. We have a lab and I am sure will love this special treat. Especially if I add on the frozen treat for the last few hot weeks of summer.
Happy National Dog Day! Your two fur babies are so well taken care of…love the woof treats!
I love starting my morning with the darling Chloe and Gracie! Happy National Dog Day, from Cupcake, Cowboy, Reilly, Winston, and Lilly!
