How to Make a Seashell & Floral Centerpiece for a Seaside-Inspired Table

Add some coastal charm to your table and find the steps to create a flower arrangement and centerpiece incorporating shells for a seaside-inspired summer table setting. Additionally, you’ll find seaside floral and table inspiration from my Monday Morning Blooms’ friends.

Happy July!

It’s one of my favorite days of the month when I join my

Our common theme for July’s edition of Monday Morning Blooms was ‘seaside’.

Pawleys Island, South Carolina #beach #seaoats #gulls #beach ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

If you can’t go to the beach, bring the beach to you via the table!

To incorporate the shells into my floral arrangement,

I used a favorite ‘vase within a vase’

method for flower arranging.

Adding shells to the walls of your vase is an easy way to add some seaside charm

and interest to your glass vase,

as well as a decorative way to conceal your flower stems!

Vase-within-a-vase method for DIY Floral Arrangement with Shells #lake #diy #flowerarrangement #seashells #beach #tablescape #tablesetting ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

Start with two vases, a smaller one, to nest inside a larger one.

My larger vase is 8 inches tall x 6 inches wide and smaller vase is 6 inches tall x 4 ½ inches wide.

You can find affordable glass vases at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Target or Walmart.

I added some smaller shells to the bottom of the larger vase to elevate the smaller one,

and then began filling the walls of the vase.

You can add your shells randomly or for more of an arranged design, use a bamboo skewer

to help shift the shells as desired as you fill the walls of the vases.

I used a Lazy Susan Turntable that I use for flower arranging,

to rotate my vase and help add the shells evenly around perimeter.

Sand dollars, found on a family trip to Harbor Island several years ago,

were added along the top of the vase.

Once you have your shells arranged to your liking,

add water to your inner vase, filling it no more than about 2/3 full,

to prevent it from spilling over onto the shells between the walls of your vase.

DIY Floral Arrangement with Shells for Seaside-inspired tablescape #lake #diy #flowerarrangement #seashells #beach #tablescape #tablesetting ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

For easy flower arranging, I used a favorite tool, chicken wire, to support the flower stems.

Chicken wire is an eco-friendly alternative to wet flower foam as it is reusable.

Cut your chicken wire at least 4 inches wider than the opening of your container,

so you have some excess wire to bend and hold against the walls of your container.

Any chicken wire will work, but I like a coated or painted wire which is rust resistant after repeated uses.

Now you’re ready to add your flowers!

I used some white alstroemeria and white hydrangeas from the grocery store

and blue hydrangeas from the garden for my seaside arrangement.

To add some additional shells to the arrangement,

bamboo skewers were tucked in among the flowers.

The shells slip over the top of the skewers and the

starfish in the arrangement is light enough

to rest on top of the hydrangea blooms.

I always comb the aisles of HomeGoods like a shell seeker ;)

and where the shell chargers washed ashore several years ago.

If you’re feeling crafty, you could easily make your own chargers with rattan chargers,

seashells, and a hot glue gun.

Here are few tips to help extend the life of your flowers in your arrangement:

🐚 Cut your flower stems at a 45 degree angle for maximum water uptake and remove any leaves below the water line.

🐚 Always add floral preservative packets to your vase water.

If you don’t have any floral preservative, you can make your own with this easy formula.

🐚 Check your water level to top it off as needed; hydrangeas are thirsty flowers.

DIY Floral Arrangement with Shells for Seaside-inspired tablescape #lake #diy #flowerarrangement #seashells #beach #tablescape #tablesetting #summer ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

🐚 To keep your cut hydrangeas from wilting:  Use Alum!

Hydrangeas are notorious for wilting and alum allows hydrangeas to draw more water from the vase.

Cut your hydrangeas in the morning with they are fully hydrated and not stressed from the heat.

When arranging them, cut each stem at a 45 degree angle for maximum water uptake

and dip 1/2 inch of each cut stem in alum powder.

🐚 Change your vase water every other day if possible.

🐚 Keep your flower arrangement away from heat and direct sunlight.

Keep your cut hydrangeas from wilting with this easy tip! #hydrangeas #flowerarrangement #diy ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

🐚 To get the longest vase life from your flowers, use

Crowning Glory, an anti-transpirant spray that seals in moisture.

It dries clear and is safe to use on all flower types, especially beneficial

for flowers that are prone to wilting due to moisture loss, like hydrangeas.

I’ve had flower arrangements last two weeks using Crowning Glory.

Crowning Glory will dry within 30 minutes to an hour, depending the temperature and humidity.

Note: Wait to spray roses with Crowning Glory after they are open

as it will prohibit them from opening further.

Good morning, Mary! The opening two images are gorgeous. It has a cooling effect just gazing at the setting! Your hydrangeas and alstroemeria are beautiful in your vase within a vase! I would love to join you at your table next to the lake. It looks so inviting and peaceful! The jute tablecloth and assorted shells as a table runner certainly mimic the seaside! Finding shell chargers several years ago was a win. I have wanted to make my own, but have yet to do so. The beaded seahorse napkin rings are charming and perfect with the sea life melamine plates. Seeded goblets and twisted rope flatware add more seaside charm to the cozy table for two!

Our heat and humidity has been oppressive. I am thankful we have had a few showers, hoping for more. It is always a pleasure to join you at one of your lakeside tables! Happy 4th of July Week 🐚🇺🇸🐚

Mary, your beach themed table is beautiful with your lake as a backdrop. Every element is lovely and creative. I’ve never tried the vase within a vase with shells. I like the bamboo skewer as a tool to arrange the shells idea.
I’ve had great success with Crowning Glory prolonging the life of flowers. I am thankful you discovered that some years back.
Have a wonderful Fourth of July.

That shell arrangement is beautiful! I have soooo many shells and now I can use them…also, the shell vase with the wine bottle is the best wine holder I’ve seen in a very long time! Thanks for these creative ideas!!!

Mary, beautiful waterside setting! Seashells are a favorite and I’m excited to see new ways to use them.
Extremely hot here in Northwest Ga! Wishing for some rain.
    Happy Fourth of July week!

Mary once again you have shown us a unique and beautiful way to set a table. Even though your “seaside” is a lake, the effect is still there. Living near the Gulf, we have managed to “collect” lots of seashells and what a great idea to put them in a vase within a vase. I have used my giant shell for many things but never a wine bottle holder. So creative. I have to admit I have thought about making my own shell chargers but after placing a few on a plate, decided I am too lazy (or perhaps no patience) for such diligent work. 🥴 The jute table covering and shell runner are perfect backdrops for your lovely table scape.

Our Gulf of Mexico water temps are running unseasonably warm for this time of year and unfortunately, that usually means the waters are perfect for hurricanes. UGH!!! Many are still working through Hurricane Ian, and certainly don’t want another so soon. So we are praying that will not happen. We have been getting lots of rain each day followed by lots of sunshine, but it feels more like a sauna but looking on the bright side…I don’t have to water the big pots. 🌸😊. Stay cool, it is July and we know that usually means more heat.

Mary, Your waterside table is beautiful! Your bouquet is gorgeous. The flowers look cool and delicate. Adding the shells to the bouquet is really clever. The linens are so pretty and I adore your seahorse napkin rings! Those were a great find! The plates are colorful and the shell wine cooler is genius! Happy Monday! Clara ❤️

Oh Mary! What an awesome floral arrangement! I LOVE the shells – what a lovely touch! Your table is so beautiful on the dock with the water view behind. Love all things water / beach. Your seahorse napkin rings are awesome also. I have made my own decorative seashell and beach chargers and get lots of compliments. It was a very fun and relaxing project. Pinning for sure and want to make this. My hydrangea is blooming and must remember the alum! Thank you!

Your waterside table is gorgeous Mary! The centerpiece is really a wow factor with the shell lined vase, fluffy blue and white hydrangeas and starfish. I love the way you put shells down the center of the table and the tablecloth is perfect for mimicking the sand. I love the seahorse napkin rings, beachy plates, and shell chargers. The large shell as a wine cooler is brilliant! Whew, I bet it was hot setting this 😅 Thank you for your effort, it is beautiful~

Your are so amazing Mary! Love, love, love your Coastal Table Scape! I cannot wait to incorporate some of your wonderful ideas at my house at the Oregon Coast. Our home is on a river that flows into the Columbia River that flows into the Pacific Ocean. After building our place 18 years ago our dream of installing a dock is finally in the process. When it is finished we plan on having a huge celebration complete with roasting a pig, lots of delicious food, a live band, and many nautical and cabin style fun decorations at every turn. I cannot wait to make some of your coastal flower arrangements with the vase in vase method. I have been pinning your coastal ideas to my Coast House board for years and now I get to bring them to life at our place. Hugs to you and your creativity!

    Hello Mary!
I am feeling cool just looking at your dockside pictures! How peaceful it all is. Your table is lovely, with the lake as your background. It’s definitely got a beach feel. Your centerpiece with the seashells in the vase and the shells in the flowers is gorgeous.
    Such a lovely table!
    Happy July!

Our weather on Sunday was much like yours, and even though the river is basically across the street, I choose indoors with A/C on days like that! You definitely did a fine job of bringing the beach to you, Mary. This is really a handsome table. I have to assume you collected all of those shells, and those tiny ones must’ve taken some time (or a screen in the water where the shells bump up against the shore?) Love the mix! Lucky you to have found those shell chargers at HG. The runner of shells looks awesome and the use of the burlap cloth definitely gives a vision of the beach. The wine is perfect, lol! Cheers to July and the hope for more rain than June!

Absolutely beautiful arrangement and table display, especially with the nod to beach sand with the tablecloth. I always appreciate the small touches you make to floral arrangements, in this case, the addition of seashells to the flowers.

We’re at 109 today and on our way to 111 this weekend, I hope you’ll be a bit cooler for the holiday weekend than what we’re experiencing!

Oh this is beautiful Mary! SO many wonderful elements, but I especially love the skewers you put into your gorgeous flower arrangement for the shells! Really clever. And the big shell for your wine holder – brilliant! (Plus Mmmmmm – I love a good Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc!) Your heat sounds hideous, but I could probably stand that warm lake water. Thanks as always for the fabulous inspiration!
