We enjoying some milder January weather after an Arctic blast of
single digit temperatures the week of Christmas. . . brrrrrrrr….
I’m continuing the tradition of our winter tree this year,
which makes for cozy winter nesting!
Our Winter Nesting Tree is a tradition that started several years ago to extend the twinkle season
into the months of January and February, when it’s cold and gray outside.
The sparkling lights of the tree help make the transition from Christmas
to winter and keep the house a little cozier and brighter.
It’s good for my mental health to turn the tree on in the mornings and evenings
and enjoy the twinkle and glow of the lights, especially when it’s dark and dreary
and has rained for what seems like weeks on end!
My joy of winter birding extends indoors to our Winter Nesting Tree,
decorated with bird ornaments, as well as glittery nests,
snowflakes, icy branches, snowy white bands of sparkling ribbon
and pine cones.
Bird ornaments collected over the years, flock to the tree
looking for a cozy place to nest for winter.
Other than the addition of a new bird ornament or snowflake,
our tree doesn’t vary much from year to year. . .
There’s a Black-capped Chickadee. . .
A Nuthatch. . .
A Cardinal. . .
A Downy Woodpecker . . .
And a Titmouse.
Along with some unidentified bird varieties
and gifts from family and friends. . .
A parliament of owls have gathered on the tree. . .

Love the sparkle, glitz and lights with the collection of beautiful birds. Really helps pass the dreary days of winter and makes everything still cozy. I have been doing this for about 10 years, changing out Christmas for a ” Winter tree” with white lights, crystal icicles and snowflakes with beautiful cardinals, a few chickadees, a nuthatch and a blue jay. I change out for spring with just the birds and from Memorial Day through Labor Day, I add small American flags throughout the tree. After Labor day, I add orange lights, colored leaves and pheasant feathers through Thanksgiving and then the cycle starts all over again. It has brought a lot of comfort and joy over the years and is always a conversation piece when company comes. Life is short, we have to do simple things that make us happy and bring joy!

Love all the different owls! YES, who knew there are sooo many different species! No, I don’t have another tree that I decorate…at age 77, I’m doing really good decorating just one 7.5 ft. Tree for Christmas! Although, I would if I could but it took me 5 days to put up all the decor & tree just for Christmas…I’ll just enjoy yours! Thanks for sharing it!! 🎄❤️🦉

I also leave some small trees with the twinkling lights up through February. All the “Christmasy” things are put away, but I enjoy a winter theme with some twinkle. I absolutely love your bird tree! I may have to start collecting bird ornaments. They are beautiful! Thank you for the inspiration!

Your winter nesting tree is so pretty, and I LOVE the owl ornaments. My favorite ornament is the cardinal: I love cardinals! We feed two cardinal pairs with a special cardinal seed blend. They must like it because they hang around often!
Many of the birds on your tree are on my feeder right now! Cardinals, nuthatch, chickadee. It’s so fun to watch them. Keeping some twinkling lights around in the winter is pretty much mandatory around here. Until this morning, we have received 0% sunshine since the first of the year. Quite gray, to say the least. Thank you for this beautiful post. You did a great job photographing your gorgeous ornaments.

I always love seeing your indoor winter nesting tree, Mary. I kept my bedroom tree up which is decorated with snowmen ornaments. I love having it come on at night and morning since I have it on a timer. We might as well have JOY and sparkle in our lives! ❤️
Love your tree Mary! You are right that the little bit of sparkle on a dreary day is uplifting. Our Northern days have been unusually dark this year, Usually January finds us with plummeting -20C temps but bright and sunny days. Not so lucky this years with dark days of rain (!) and right now, a lot of snow floating down. My husband turns the tree lights on (still in its holiday glory)first thing in the morning and it stays on all day until we retire in the evening. We have not done that before!! I am taking down the Christmas decor from the rest of the house but have agreed to leave the tree up for a few more days..it takes several days to dismantle the tree and then I’ll lure my youngest from his cozy apartment with the promise of a lovely hot dinner (with take home treats) as payment for assisting with carrying everything to the basement!

I just adore your bird tree. One of my favorite things to do is watch the birds in my yard. I have a reading room/ craft room on the second floor that looks right into a Bradford Pear tree and the birds are so busy…I feel like I am right there with them. I have a wooden tree just made from flat pieces of wood I copied from another blog that I put up on my screen porch but can enjoy from the inside when it’s too cold to be outside. I put it up in September as my plants are coming inside with small pumpkins and leaves…then change the lights to orange and decorate with Halloween goodies….November means the pumpkins, acorns and leaves back on with a few small turkeys and Pilgrims. Christmas it gets the white lights again and of course small Santa’s and trees. I will change it to snowmen decorations soon and then it will get put away probably in March to make room for plants and Spring! Peace!

Mary, your Winter nesting tree is one of my favorite things you do every year. I’ve tried finding some of those items but usually come up short. Where could I find those icy branches in 2023? They would be perfect for the snow we received last night. In the meantime, may I please move in for the month of January? 😊 Love from snowy Asheville.
Thank you Peyton! The icy branches came from Michaels, I cut them apart so I had more pieces to add to the tree. I would check Hobby Lobby’s floral department too for some but you probably won’t be able to find them until October or so. I’m envious of your snow and keeping my fingers crossed for some this winter. :) ♥
