Happy October!
It’s one of my favorite days of the month when I join my
Monday Morning Blooms’ friends to share some flower therapy.
You can find my flower friends’ links and blooming inspiration at the bottom of this post.
My favorite color is October!
In addition to her color, I’m ready for October’s corn mazes, pumpkin patches,
harvest of fall flavors, hayrides and Halloween!
Our common theme for this week’s edition of Monday Morning Blooms was ‘Harvest’.
I’m celebrating October’s arrival on The Potting Bench with a harvest of fall . . .
Pumpkins, maple leaves, Indian corn and mums.
Limelight Hydrangeas have begun their fall metamorphosis and the blooms
will continue to ‘pinken up’ and begin to deepen and burnish to a bronzy-hue.
Fall is a great time to plant and add shrubs to your landscape!
If you’re looking for an easy to grow, low maintenance shrub in your garden that will provide you with
both beautiful fresh and dried flowers, see my public service announcement:
Plant a Limelight Hydrangea…or Five
I harvested some hydrangeas to fill some copper and rust watering cans.
And The Potting Bench underwent a metamorphosis recently too. . .
Thank you for all your kind comments on the addition to my Potting Bench.
I thought the pediment / upcycled gable vent could use a little embellishment,
so I added a small grapevine wreath. . .
It’s adorned with some limelight hydrangea blooms and seed pods cut from the Chaste tree.
Pumpkins line the top shelf of The Potting Bench. . .
I’m an equal-opportunity-pumpkin-lover and don’t discriminate!
I love pumpkins of all colors and sizes. . .
orange, white, gray and green, big and small, smooth and warty.
Zinnias are still pushing blooms, attracting fritillary butterflies. . .
They provide some welcome fall color in the garden as they flutter by.
An English chimney pot corrals an assortment of garden tools. . .
rakes and a shovel.
With flower magnets for a blooming embellishment.
Zinnias, Crape Myrtle and Chaste tree seed pods and hydrangeas fill watering cans.
Pumpkins, Indian corn and a few maple leaves are
tucked in and around a grapevine wreath for texture.
Dried hydrangeas fill zinc watering cans, joining some vintage garden tools.

What a beautiful harvest bench!! Enjoyed!!!
Absolutely perfect! Love, love, love. Happy Fall!
Good morning, Mary. The harvest of pumpkins, maple leaves, Indian corn, limelights, and mums on the potting bench is a fabulous welcome to October (my favorite month)! The small grapevine wreath was the perfect addition to your newly added pediment. The flower magnets are so cute on the garden tools. Only you would think to embellish them 😍 In my opinion, one can never have too many pumpkins.
It is always a treat to visit with you and enjoy a dose of beauty. Happy October🧡
Wow, what rich color on the potting bench! I love the light of fall, there’s just something about it….
Gorgeous pumpkins and fall foliage & floral. It’s so great that you simply pluck from the landscape to enhance the harvest. And your assortment of vintage gardening items makes my heart skip a beat just looking at it. Beautiful October display!
Love the quote about your favorite color October. Hope you were spared any damage from Ian.My heart breaks for the folks in Florida. We lost power for about 12 hrs and have a big pickup of branches ,leaves and thousands of acorns but no real damage. Could have been so much worseNow for some October blue skies and 🌞. This is my week to shop for pumpkins for our front porch. The odder the better! Love your potting bench and trying to convince my bh to make me one but not getting very far. I agree everyone needs to plant some limelight Hydrangeas. Greatmulti season plant. Also like your tip about using Vitex seed pods in arrangements. Good filler.
Have a good first week of October.
Simply beautiful! I love your lime hydrangeas and hope to add some to my garden. Looking forward to Rowena’s appearance! Peace.
Glorious colors – welcoming autumn in all its splendor~
Your potting bench is beautifully adorned in Harvest array, Mary! The addition of the grapevine wreath to the top is perfect! Happy October! 🍁
Mary, Your potting bench reflects the harvest quite well. The grapevine wreath is the perfect addition to the top. Your limelights are really pretty. The various pumpkins add so much texture and color. Now that it October, I really must get the porch ready for Fall. Thanks for the inspiration! Clara❤️
Fall Fabulous Mary, I’m in pumpkin heaven! I agree, all pumpkins are welcome, big and small, smooth or warty, any color, bring them on! The limelights are perfect and I love the wreath on your new gable. Love your Autumn color palette too, and those orange butterflies are so pretty!
I purchased a Limelight hydragea a couple years ago after one of your posts. I love it! It has grown so fast and the fall color is gorgeous. Thank you for this blog, Mary, I always find inspiration here!
Beautiful harvest on your potting bench! Your vintage tools and watering cans are so charming. Limelights always are cheerful and this time of year turning pinkish and bronze are so pretty. Your pumpkins of all sizes, colors, and textures with maple leaves, Indian corn, and mums scream fall. I love that the gulf fritillary’s are enjoying your zinnias. Your MMB arrangement is the perfect fall harvest.
You are such an encourager. Spurs me on the see what you have created. Beautiful. Cherry
Mary, your potting bench looks amazing with its new gable. The perfect spot to showcase all those beautiful pumpkins. I’m inspired, as soon as we get back from our trip, I’m going to give our potting bench a make over for October. It’s always such a joy to join you for Monday Morning Blooms. Happy October! xo Lidy
How do you keep the squirrels from eating your pumpkins?
Hi Kathryn, We haven’t had a problem with the squirrels eating our pumpkins, probably because we have bird feeders that they feed from regularly. :) I just read that you can try applying Vick’s vapor rub or petroleum jelly to your pumpkins, as they don’t like sticky substances or the odor from vapor rub.
Mary, your potting bench looks just gorgeous adorned for autumn. The collection of pumpkins and hydrangeas make the most beautiful combination. I am envious of your hydrangeas. The deer have eaten 14 of my hydrangea bushes. I had managed to keep them from my White Wedding ones. To my dismay, this morning I stepped out to look below my back porch, and they were completely eaten to the ground. They were so beautiful, and I was so proud of them. I’m happy that you shared your pretty blooms with us. They brightened my day! I hope your October is full of blessings and joy!
Too funny. I was just on Pinterest looking at hydrangeas, hoping to find ideas on where to plant a potted hydrangea that I used to decorate my porch during the summer months. While on Pinterest, I saw beautiful hedgerows of hydrangeas and thought that would be really pretty in my back yard (I know just the spot). Then I opened your email and saw your PSA on the lovely limelight hydrangeas. I think it’s meant to be – – I need to grab 5 or 6 limelights. 😉 So, it’s off to Lowe’s to see if they have any in stock. As always, thank you for the inspiration! By the way, love the addition to the potting bench…
Mary, Pure Autumn Magic, all of it, love, your new work bench and table setting, and pumpkins the entire package!!!!
Wow Mary, an abundance of color on your rustic potting bench. I love the variety of pumpkins and of course your beloved hydrangeas. A lovely post to welcome October.
I love love love October. Hands down my favourite month to. There’s so much going on with colours this time of year. Love your blog. Sending good wishes from Bedford.

Nothing makes me happier than to see a gorgeous display on your newly refreshed potting bench. So many delightful things to see. The variety of pumpkins are truly a sight to see amongst the beautiful arrangements of hydrangeas nestled in the watering cans. I cannot imagine October on the lake…thus being your favorite month of gorgeous leaves reflecting on the water and leaf peeping trips in the mountains. Happy, Happy October Mary!!!!
Fall is my favorite season and you certainly know how to show her off at her best! Your gable really sets its off, happy fall to you!
I love your addition of the pediment / upcycled vent to your potting bench, it gives it a little something extra and the wreath gives it the “Mary touch” – perfect! All of the harvest bounty and flowers in the watering cans are just beautiful! Great job Mary!
Everyone’s photos are gorgeous, and I love your warty pumpkins…so much fun. Texture is always amazing. I did receive some warty gourds which I’m having fun with from a friend I gave plants to! Such is the gardener’s world. Sharing always a win-win! Hugs, Sandi
