Time to get out my green dishes and plan our St Patrick’s Day menu which is always cornbeef and cabbage, lots of boiled red potatoes carrots and homemade Irish soda bread. Also must have mustard horseradish sauce for cornbeef. Always cook enough of everything so we are sure to have leftovers. My favorite is cornbeef hash with poached eggs on top and Irish soda bread on the side. Yum. Thanks for this great homage to St Patrick’s Day. Erin go Braugh.

    HI Mary,

Important business first! Would you share the manufacturer and pattern of the green cabbage set of dishes? I nearly had my hands on a FULL set with all the platters two years ago, and I’ve since forgotten the name as I had to erase the memory of missing out on the set from my mind!

My favorite Irish food would be my mother’s recipe of corned beef and cabbage, along with the memories of this dish shared with my family when I was a child.

    • March 1, 2022 at 5:53 am

Hi Betsy, Bordallo Pinheiro, wouldn’t a full set be fun to have?! I found my cabbage leaf plates at Tuesday Morning many years ago, I miss their stores. ☘️

I saw your tribute to your sweet Bichon today and it hit me hard! I just had to Euthanize my beloved little Bichon last Thursday. I know what you meant when you said that the recent loss of your Bichon is even harder because it brings back memories of your other one that you lost last year. The same is true for me. I loved all your quotes under the dogs pictures. Thank you, it was a comfort for me!

Wow, Mary! I think this is your most fabulous post – and that’s saying a lot!! We were scheduled to visit Ireland in June 2020…but, Covid prevented us. I’ve been in an Ireland funk ever since and your post is just what I need as St. Patrick’s Day approaches. I love all the table settings and recipes – so beautifully presented (as always). My favorite Irish food is soda bread and I’m going to try your scone and Guinness stew recipe this year. I’m also subscribing…which I should have done years ago as I am a regular reader.

On a totally different holiday note – I’m still getting compliments from my Thanksgiving turkey snack plate – which was HUGELY inspired by yours. So creative and pretty – although my husband refuses to volunteer for making the cheese leaves next time. ;-) Thanks for all the inspiration. Cheers!!

    Mary
My family has a tradition of a boiled corned beef dinner with the cabbage, carrots and potatoes cooked in the liquid the corned beef has been simmered in for hours. It is our family favorite and until my daughter married a young man from Ireland I thought it was a traditional Irish dish. First time I served it to our new family member ( Gerard O’Brien) he asked the heck it was. He had never heard of corned beef!
I adore the floral arrangement with tulips and hydrangeas and I’m borrowing your idea of using green cabbage plates and bowls for St. Patrick’s Day table settings
