I have followed you by email for a looong time. You always have the most wonderful recipes to share.
My favorite Christmas recipe – since that’s the only time I bake it – is my grandmother’s Japanese Fruit
Cake. Not sure why it’s called a fruitcake since it’s nothing like the fruitcakes we all know. It’s a cake,
sweet and full of good spiciness and rich icing!

My absolute favorite Christmas recipe is one that was handed down to me the first Christmas after I married in 1987 by my Grandma May who made the cookies every year for our family gatherings: Springerles which are a delicious combination of the flavors of vanilla, lemon and anise. The chewy crisp cookie is imprinted on top with an embossed picture that is created by the embossed rolling pin being pressed into the soft rolled out dough. The cookies are carefully cut apart along the edges of each little picture design, laid into prepared baking sheets that are sprinkled with anise seeds, then covered with towels and allowed to dry a bit before baked where they puff up creating the chewy inside and crispy crackly top where the rolling pin print is pictured. The bottoms are beautiful with the baked in anise seeds which provide the beloved flavor of Christmas for me.

🎄I have been receiving your emails now for several years.
🎄As far as my favorites cookies. There are manny. But the most nostalgic one for me is the candy cane cookie. My mother found the recipe in a magazine many years ago, and my sister and I still make them today. Mom is still with us today and enjoys them very much at 100 years old. So this recipe goes back a ways.

What are your thoughts on the cookie? I made it & found it was woefully under-spiced/bland & we know the bourbon bakes out. The only ‘zip’ was the glaze. So disappointed in Southern Living.
